January 15, 2021- Message from CVESD Superintendent

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff Members:

As we embark on this new year, I want to thank all of you for your commitment to one another and to our students. We will continue to face many challenges and hurdles. However, we will tackle and resolve these challenges with vigor, enthusiasm, creativity, and fearlessness. Each one of you has made and will continue to make a positive difference for someone else.

Last year was a year for reflection, especially about what matters most: treating everyone with respect and compassion; acting with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in our work; taking time to appreciate one another and to build a stronger community; being open to perspectives that are not your own; and maintaining a laser-like focus on student outcomes.

I appreciate your ongoing commitment to education, learning, and well-being and to ensuring that equity is at the center of that commitment. Students and educators across the country need as much support as we can provide to make up for the learning loss, trauma, and scars that occurred last year—and most recently from last week’s attack on our nation’s capital. All of us need to “lean in” even more, with our collective sleeves rolled up for a year of absolute essential work. As educators, we do indeed make room for discussions that stem from our students’ questions, feelings, anxiety, and concerns—even while we grapple with our own disbelief at our nation’s divisions. Our District has provided its educators with strategies to explore events in a reasoned, civilized context that is in keeping with our nation’s core values. We will discuss issues in a responsible way that respects the diversity, views, and beliefs of all students.

As I reflect upon learnings from last year, I discovered my fundamental priority is the health and safety of our community, followed by ensuring that we continue to focus on our mission of providing an excellent learning environment for our students. All this while maintaining financial stability as good stewards of public funds. My commitment to each of you this year is to strengthen our community through better engagement and enhance our connections with heightened transparency and communication.  Be on the lookout for a survey from your school’s principal in regard to In-Person (Hybrid Model) and Distance Learning options. Click here for our most recent updates, including access to Frequently Asked Questions.

I embarked upon my 2021 journey with a realistic sense of optimism and opportunity. There is much to accomplish ahead. I am eager and honored to embrace these opportunities with all of you.

Warm regards,

Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

January 14, 2021: Important Information

Greetings Thurgood Marshall Elementary School (TMES) Families,

We hope that you and your family are well. Preparations for In-Person School versus remaining in Distance Learning are underway. For planning purposes, we need information from all of our families. The Parent Survey below describes general details about CVESD’s In-Person (Hybrid Model)/Distance Learning plan. However, TMES will develop more specific plans such as schedules, arrival/dismissal procedures, etc.

Carefully read the details prior to completing and submitting the form. This specific form is required to be submitted by Monday, January 25, 2021, at 3 p.m.

Once San Diego County returns to the red tier, Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) will begin utilizing a hybrid instructional model. At this time, we do not have an official return date. To learn more about this model, I encourage all families to watch December 17, 2020, Town Hall Meeting with Dr. Escobedo (CVESD Superintendent). Also, I would encourage families to watch the Ready for Students to Return video. To watch both videos, click the links at the bottom of this message.

Re-Opening Plan highlights include:
• Required safety measures: personal protective equipment, physical distancing protocols, air filtration devices in classrooms, and disinfecting of classrooms between cohorts.
• In-person instruction will take place Monday through Thursday in a half-day cohort model (half-days will be approximately three hours).
• Fridays will be distance learning only (no in-person instruction).
• To complete the required daily instructional minutes, students will be expected to complete independent assignments.
• Cohort size will be determined according to maximum classroom capacity based on six feet of physical distancing.
• Students will not have breakfast, lunch, or recess on campus.
• CVESD will continue to provide weekly meal distribution every Tuesday in front of the mural from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
• Families who elect to remain in distance learning may only switch to in-person instruction if space is available.
• Students may be re-assigned to a different teacher whether you choose to remain in distance learning or have your child participate in in-person instruction.
• Transportation will only be provided for Special Education students, in accordance with their IEP.

All TMES families attending TMES are expected to submit a response by Monday, January 25, 2021. If your response is not received, your child WILL BE PLACED in a distance learning classroom. Families with more than one child attending TMES are required to submit a separate form for each child attending TMES.

Within the upcoming weeks, Dr. Loyce will schedule a meeting for parents to learn more information. We encourage all families to subscribe to the TMES School Blog at http://www.thurgoodmarshallmustangs.org/.

Families, thank you in advance for your attention in this matter. I know that the pandemic has impacted all of our families differently. Please continue to stay safe and well. If you have additional questions and or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Loyce, Principal at (619) 656- 6252.
