Mask Update: The Chula Vista Elementary School District will mandate properly positioned and correctly fitted masks to be worn at all campuses, including District offices, at all times, regardless of vaccination status. Adults may only remove masks when actively eating or drinking. Masks must be worn if anyone is around, students or staff, vaccinated or not. This includes parents/guardians who may be walking their students onto campus. Another example of the policy’s intent might be when staff is in the break room–they need to be masked unless actively eating or drinking. Students may remove their masks only to play at recess and to eat, both of which should happen outdoors, weather permitting. Masks are required in hallways while traveling to and from the playground and lunch area. If you have a sub, please ensure the sub is aware of the mask requirement as detailed in your sub-plan. Also, please place this reminder in your communication to parents.

Campus Safety: Students cannot arrive to campus before 8:15 a.m. unless they are in the YMCA program. Students must be picked up daily by their parent or guardian Students who remain after school must be signed in at an assigned approved program, D.A.S.H. or the YMCA Child Care. TMES does not provide after-school supervision for students who are waiting for parents or siblings.  Students are not allowed to remain after school and play on the playground or campus unsupervised.

Bus Loop Safety: The bus loop is only for school busses only. We have families driving in the bus loop during the day and looking into the playground, blocking busses, or dropping students off in the loop. We want to make sure everyone is safe. When individuals drive their vehicles in the bus look and look at staff and students, this action is causing concern to our students and staff as they are worried people are unsafe. Any questions or concerns regarding recess, please contact the classroom teacher. Questions, please contact the office.

Arrival and Departure Reminders:

  • For children who line up on the blacktop, parents enter/exit through the blacktop gate.  Please exit as soon as morning announcements are finished or by 8:50 a.m.  Do not escort your child to class due to the fact that we lock gates at 8:45 when school starts.
  • The gate by the front office is open from 8:15-8:45 a.m.  This gate is intended for late student arrivals starting at 8:45 so parents must exit out of the blacktop gate to avoid the crowding at this gate.  Students arriving after 8:45 need to come into the office to get a late slip and will be let onto campus through the locked gate by someone in the office.  Parents will be allowed to enter campus with their students.
  • For children who arrive at Zone 1 (TK, Kinder, SDC students) please remember to pick up from this gate.  Parents will be asked to remain outside of the gate after your student is picked up until 3:15 when all the gates will be opened.  Do not come onto campus and wait for student dismissal.
  • Remember, no dogs are allowed on campus at any time.

Together we can have a smooth transition to the beginning and ending of the school day for all students!  Thank you.

FREE COVID-19 TESTING: Get a PCR/NAAT or Antigen test at a free County facility, at a medical provider, or at our District Office (Education Services and Support Center), located at 84 East J Street, Chula Vista. The district office site hours are from M-TH 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Currently, we can only test STAFF and CVESD STUDENTS. No family members are able to test, at this time. In addition to the ESSC, the County of San Diego has opened a COVID-19 testing center that is also free, and with longer hours that include Saturday testing opportunities. For Spanish-language, make sure to select that option in the drop-down menu. Here is the County info:

The County of San Diego has opened a new testing site in Chula Vista at the Oleander Community Center, 1301 Oleander Avenue (formerly known as the Boys and Girls Club). They are open Tuesday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are welcomed until the daily maximum testing capacity is reached. Testing is free and only takes a few minutes out of your day. Seek testing as often as necessary to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.

Is your child sick? Please call the office and notify our staff of any illness-related concerns. If your child is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and/or gets sent home, we cannot accept the Antigen test for their return to campus. PCR/NAAT tests are needed for anyone who is symptomatic—or who is asymptomatic (doesn’t have symptoms) yet tested positive with an Antigen test.  As always, please contact our school office staff if your child will be absent from school for any reason,

My child is sick and does not take a COVID-19 test

If your child gets sick and you or your healthcare provider decides not to have them get a polymerase chain reaction (PCR/NAAT) to determine if they have COVID, they may return when:

  • It is at least 10 days from their symptom onset and
  • They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever-reducing medication and
  • Their symptoms are improving.

My child is sick and/or tests positive with the COVID-19 virus

If your child tests positive for COVID-19 through either PCR (NAAT) Test or antigen test, they may return when:

  • It is at least 10 days from their symptom onset or the date they tested positive if asymptomatic and
  • They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever-reducing medication and
  • Their symptoms are improving.

My child is sick and tests negative for the COVID-19 virus

If your child gets sick and tests negative for COVID-19 through a PCR (NAAT) Test, they may return when:

  • They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever-reducing medication and
  • Their symptoms have been improving for 24 hours and
  • They provide proof of the negative PCR test results to the school site.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Negative Antigen tests are not accepted. Currently, San Diego County only accepts negative PCR (NAAT) Tests for return to work/school. It is recommended that parents choose to get a PCR (NAAT) Test for their children, to prevent having to retest. Parents can use the testing available through the District to meet these requirements.

My child has symptoms that are a result of a chronic pre-existing condition

  • If your child has a pre-existing condition, which has previously been reported to the school, call the school nurse for further directions.
  • Students who have a pre-existing condition may return to school with a note from their healthcare provider. The note MUST: Be signed by a licensed MD/DO/NP/PA who manages the condition.
  • Confirm the chronic diagnosis (cite labs, date of record when diagnosed with the condition, etc.).
  • Include the provider’s contact information.
  • Explain how the symptoms are unrelated to COVID-19.
  • Be accompanied by a signed consent (from the parent/guardian) for the school to interact with the MD/DO/NP/PA.

Meals: Meals for breakfast and lunch will be provided for free to all students in the 2021-22 school year. Parents may provide lunch from home if they choose. At breakfast, students can walk up to the service line and select one entree, one of any fruit choices, and one beverage container. At lunch, students select one entree, one of any fruit choices, one vegetable choice and one beverage container.

August 30, 2021: Important Mask Update (Indoors and Outdoors on CVESD Grounds)

CVESD School Board Strengthens COVID-19 Masking Guidance and Safety Protocol

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Board of Education has approved changes to the Injury and Illness Prevention Program, the COVID-19 Prevention Plan, and District Guidance to Staff, Students, Parents/Guardians, and the community regarding COVID-19. Below are the changes that were approved and take effect on Monday, August 30, 2021:

All school sites will create a Site Safety Committee, with representation from certificated, classified, and non-represented employees, as well as parents, to address site-specific safety concerns and help implement District safety measures. At TMES, this committee is called PBIS. 
  • The Chula Vista Elementary School District will publish a weekly COVID-19 update with simple, bulleted information, including current District case numbers (including the last reporting date for those numbers) as well as any changes made in COVID-19 guidelines that week. It will be sent directly to stakeholders including, but not limited to, staff and parents/guardians via email and School Messenger and published on the District website in an easily accessible location.

August 27, 2021: PTC Dine Out Fundraiser Night

Dear TMES Families,

Please join us on Friday, August 27th for our PTC Dine Out To Make a Difference at El Pollo Grill.  Present the attached flyer to either location and our PTC will receive 30% of the purchases made that day.  This is a great way to help out the students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary while enjoying a family meal.  Thank you!

Dress Code: Please ensure your child has the appropriate shoes and clothing to attend school. We want to make sure all Mustang students are safe while on campus. Questions, please refer to the handbook.

SHOES SHOULD:

  • Be worn at all times and tied
  • Cover heels and toes
  • Tennis shoes must be tied at all times
  • Sandals must have closed toes and heel straps
  • Flip-flops or other backless shoes or sandals are not acceptable and can create a safety issue

TOPS SHOULD:

  • Not be backless, low back or low front
  • Not be tube tops, halter tops, or spaghetti straps
  • Not show bra, bandeau or bra-like items
  • Be long enough so that skin is not showing at midriff when arms are raised
  • Have at least one-inch straps
  • Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times

PANTS SHOULD:

  • Be fitted at the waist
  • Be worn on the waist, not sagging
  • Stay up on the waist if the belt isn’t worn
  • Not show skin
  • Completely cover other clothing worn as an undergarment (gym shorts, underwear, etc.)
  • Leggings must be worn appropriately

FREE: Breakfast and lunch are FREE daily for all Mustangs.

Food Allergies: Some students in your child’s school/class have a life-threatening allergy to nuts (i.e.; peanuts, tree nuts, and can be found in ingredients from several products you may not be aware of). Some products that include nuts are peanut butter and Nutella.  Food allergies for some children are very serious. Accidental ingestion, airborne transmission, or personal contact of any of the above can cause a severe allergic reaction and even death for those who are extremely allergic. How can a parent help? Although a child with a food allergy cannot always avoid all contact with these foods, we ask that a concerted effort is made to send snacks and treats to the classroom that does not contain any kind of nuts.  Please check the ingredients on any snacks or treats before sending to school. Thank you for your anticipated assistance in helping to protect our children.

Dress Code: Please ensure your child has the appropriate shoes and clothing to attend school. We want to make sure all Mustang students are safe while on campus. Questions, please refer to the handbook.

Shoes Should:

  • Be worn at all times and tied
  • Cover heels and toes
  • Tennis shoes must be tied at all times
  • Sandals must have closed toes and heel straps
  • Flip-flops or other backless shoes or sandals are not acceptable and can create a safety issue

TOPS SHOULD:

  • Not be backless, low back or low front
  • Not be tube tops, halter tops, or spaghetti straps
  • Not show bra, bandeau or bra-like items
  • Be long enough so that skin is not showing at midriff when arms are raised
  • Have at least one-inch straps
  • Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times

PANTS SHOULD:

  • Be fitted at the waist
  • Be worn on the waist, not sagging
  • Stay up on the waist if the belt isn’t worn
  • Not show skin
  • Completely cover other clothing worn as an undergarment (gym shorts, underwear, etc.)
  • Leggings must be worn appropriately

FREE: Breakfast and lunch are FREE daily for all Mustangs.

Food Allergies: Some students in your child’s school/class have a life-threatening allergy to nuts (i.e.; peanuts, tree nuts, and can be found in ingredients from several products you may not be aware of). Some products that include nuts are peanut butter and Nutella.  Food allergies for some children are very serious. Accidental ingestion, airborne transmission, or personal contact of any of the above can cause a severe allergic reaction and even death for those who are extremely allergic. How can a parent help? Although a child with a food allergy cannot always avoid all contact with these foods, we ask that a concerted effort is made to send snacks and treats to the classroom that does not contain any kind of nuts.  Please check the ingredients on any snacks or treats before sending to school. Thank you for your anticipated assistance in helping to protect our children.

Campus Safety: Students can not arrive to campus before 8:15 a.m. unless they are in the YMCA program. Students must be picked up daily by their parent or guardian Students who remain after school must be signed in at an assigned approved program, D.A.S.H. or the YMCA Child Care. TMES does not provide after-school supervision for students who are waiting for parents or siblings.  Students are not allowed to remain after school and play on the playground or campus unsupervised.

Bus Loop Safety: The bus loop is only for school busses only. We have families driving in the bus loop during the day and looking into the playground, blocking busses, or dropping students off in the loop. We want to make sure everyone is safe. When individuals drive their vehicles in the bus look and look at staff an students, this action is causing concern to our students and staff as they are worried people are un-safe. Any questions or concerns regarding recess, please contact the classroom teacher. Questions, please contact the office.

Arrival and Departure Reminders:

  • For children who line-up on the blacktop, parents enter/exit through the blacktop gate.  Please exit as soon as morning announcements are finished or by 8:50 a.m.  Do not escort your child to class due to the fact that we lock gates at 8:45 when school starts.
  • The gate by the front office is open from 8:15-8:45 a.m.  This gate is intended for late student arrivals starting at 8:45 so parents must exit out of the blacktop gate to avoid the crowding at this gate.  Students arriving after 8:45 need to come into the office to get a late slip and will be let onto campus through the locked gate by someone in the office.  Parents will not be allowed to enter onto campus with their student.  If your child needs to be walked to class, someone in the office will take care of this.
  • For children who arrive at Zone 1 (TK, Kinder, SDC students) please remember to drop-off and pick-up from this gate.  Parents will be asked to remain outside of the gate after your student is picked-up until 3:15 when all the gates will be opened.  Do not come onto campus and wait for student dismissal.
  • Remember, no dogs are allowed on campus at any time!

Together we can have a smooth transition to the beginning and ending of the school day for all students!  Thank you.

 FREE COVID-19 TESTING: Get a PCR/NAAT or Antigen test at a free County facility, at a medical provider, or at our District Office (Education Services and Support Center), located at 84 East J Street, Chula Vista. The district office site hours are from M-TH 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Currently, we can only test STAFF and CVESD STUDENTS. No family members are able to test, at this time. In addition to the ESSC, the County of San Diego has opened a COVID-19 testing center that is also free, and with longer hours that include Saturday testing opportunities. For Spanish-language, make sure to select that option in the drop down menu. Here is the County info:

The County of San Diego has opened a new testing site in Chula Vista at the Oleander Community Center, 1301 Oleander Avenue (formerly known as the Boys and Girls Club). They are open Tuesday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are welcomed until the daily maximum testing capacity is reached. Testing is free and only takes a few minutes out of your day. Seek testing as often as necessary to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.

If your child gets sick and you or your healthcare provider decides not to have them get a polymerase chain reaction (PCR/NAAT) to determine if they have COVID, they may return when:

o It is at least 10 days from their symptom onset and

o They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and

o Their symptoms are improving.

 My child is sick and/or tests positive with the COVID-19 virus

If your child tests positive for COVID-19 through either PCR (NAAT) Test or antigen test, they may return when:

o It is at least 10 days from their symptom onset or the date they tested positive if asymptomatic and

o They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and

o Their symptoms are improving.

 My child is sick and tests negative for the COVID-19 virus

If your child gets sick and tests negative for COVID-19 through a PCR (NAAT) Test, they may return when:

o They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and

o Their symptoms have been improving for 24 hours and

o They provide proof of the negative PCR test results to the school site.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Negative Antigen tests are not accepted. Currently, San Diego County only accepts negative PCR (NAAT) Tests for return to work/school. It is recommended that parents choose to get a PCR (NAAT) Test for their children, to prevent having to retest. Parents can use the testing available through the District to meet these requirements.

 My child has symptoms that are a result of a chronic pre-existing condition

o If your child has a pre-existing condition, which has previously been reported to the

school, call the school nurse for further directions.

o Students who have a pre-existing condition may return to school with a note from their

healthcare provider. The note MUST:

o Be signed by a licensed MD/DO/NP/PA who manages the condition.

o Confirm the chronic diagnosis (cite labs, date of record when diagnosed with the condition, etc.).

o Include the provider’s contact information.

o Explain how the symptoms are unrelated to COVID-19.

o Be accompanied by a signed consent (from the parent/guardian) for the school to interact with the MD/DO/NP/PA.

CVESD will allow parents to drop off and pick up their children on the school campus, following health and safety guidelines.

 

Parents are expected to leave campus immediately following dropping off or picking up their children. If local or state guidelines change the District may revise this practice, accordingly.
