March 15, 2022: COVID Test Kit Distribution on Thursday and Friday
In an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, CVESD has provided a test kit to distribute to families, for each enrolled student.
As we gear up for the start of school on April 4, 2022. CVESD encourages all families to access at-home COVID-19 testing for their children before returning to school after spring break. To help make this a reality, CVESD is providing one rapid test kit for each TK–6 student.
The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) will be distributing the tests to students on Thursday and Friday of this week. Parents and adult family members may pick up their test kit on Thursday or Friday. Test kit distribution will take place from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the assigned zones below. Instructions are available by video and as an insert in the box. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBt_H4Gc-rU
While there is no statewide testing mandate for students returning to school, CVESD highly encourages you to use the kits to test your children for COVID-19 before they return from break to help keep in-person school safe for everyone.
Should your child(ren) test positive, keep them home from school, contact our attendance office at (619) 656-6252 x 550110 and enter the positive here: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=DG566I7Aska7c0XdByuqM0K_8Per_7JKkxowwqN4od1UMTZCRVNPQlE0TFRGNzU5TVM3TUI2TzA4MC4u
If the results of your child’s at-home test are unclear, please retest at CVESD’s Education Services and Support Center (hours available online at cvesd.org) or at a local testing site. If you are unable to get a COVID-19 test from your healthcare provider, testing is available at several locations across the county.
In addition, if your child(ren) has/have symptoms (like cough and/or fever) or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, please keep them home and use your test to see if they have COVID-19. In this case, please call us before they return to school – even if the test is negative. More testing may be needed.
And of course, if your child is feeling well, tests negative, and has no COVID-19 symptoms, we will look forward to welcoming them back to campus.
While there is no statewide testing mandate for students returning to school, we highly encourage you to use the kits to test your child(ren) for COVID-19 before returning from Spring Break on April 4, 2022.
Instructions on how to use the test kit are available by video and as an insert in the box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBt_H4Gc-rU

CVESD New Mask Mandate- Effective March 21, 2022:
From the outset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has placed the safety and health of our students, teachers, and staff, as our number one priority. On February 28th, Governor Newsom announced his plan to lift indoor mask mandates at California schools due to declining case rates and hospitalizations. Chula Vista Elementary School District is pleased to announce that last night, the Board of Education took action to lift the indoor mask mandate starting on March 21, 2022.
We are committed to keeping our schools as safe as possible. This means, beginning Monday, March 21, 2022, all students, and staff members in Chula Vista Elementary Schools and buildings will no longer be required to wear a mask indoors, although it is still strongly recommended. Any student, parent, or staff member who chooses to continue wearing a mask may do so. Please note, masking is still required indoors in our schools through Friday, March 18.
CVESD continues to lead the state in the most comprehensive safety practices. As masks become optional, we have a lot of practices in place that will allow us to transition into optional masking with little disruption. Our voluntary weekly testing will continue to be a critical way that we keep our classrooms and schools safe. Every desk in every classroom and high-touch surface areas will be cleaned and sanitized daily by trained staff. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will continue to be readily available. Home COVID-19 tests will be made available for students during the week of March 14. It is strongly encouraged that students test for COVID-19 either using an at-home test or testing at one of our five testing locations at the end of Spring Break, before returning to school on April 4.
Please speak to your children about the importance of continuing to wear masks indoors through Friday, March 18, so as not to disrupt their learning process. Our hardworking teachers, classified staff, and administrators need your continued support to keep the focus on teaching and learning in our schools.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout the pandemic as we continue to provide our students with the best in-person and virtual learning.
Parent Volunteers: Parent Volunteers are now able to come and support our campus with our without a vaccine status. We are very excited to have our parent volunteers come back to campus. Training dates will be made available next Monday. Training is required for parent volunteers that will be volunteering regularly. Below, you will find the CVESD Volunteer testing requirements.
- All weekly volunteers must complete a volunteer application and attend training.
- If chaperoning a field trip or one time event, one test within two days of the event is required.
- If volunteering regularly, testing is required weekly.
- All volunteers must wear a mask indoors on campus.
- Per CVESD, parent volunteers are unable to go inside the classroom.
- Volunteers can test only at the COVID Clinic testing kiosks. Or, volunteers can test during the weekly cart testing on Friday’s.
- Volunteers must share their results with office staff.
- Primary health (Hedenkamp/District Office) may not be used for parent volunteer testing.
- Vaccinated and Boosted parents do not have to test.
COVID (Health and Safety): Protecting the health, safety, and well-being of our school community remains our top priority. CVESD has implemented updated COVID-19 safety protocols in alignment with California Department of Public Health mitigation strategies to keep our students and staff safe while on campus. It is our hope that through proactive safety measures and clear communication we can keep our classrooms open and students participating in in-person instruction daily. It will take a collaborative effort between home and school to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 on our campuses and ensure a successful school year.
Help us prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our school community by screening your child before school each day. We ask your family to conduct health screenings for their child(ren) before leaving for school each morning. This could include checking your child’s temperature, assessing for symptoms consistent with COVID-19, and asking your child “do you feel well today?” Please do not send your child to school medicated with symptoms or with COVID related symptoms. If you have any questions on if you should send your child to school, contact the front office. Below, you will find a list of symptoms:
Fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and/or diarrhea.
Also, do not send your student to school if they have been identified as a close contact or have had possible exposure to a COVID-19 case and are awaiting COVID-19 test results. We want to keep staff and students safe and we need your help.
Staff members will monitor student health throughout the day and temperature checks will be conducted if a child appears to not feel well or develops symptoms while at school. Chula Vista Elementary School District requires any student or staff exhibiting a fever or any of the COVID-19 symptoms to be immediately sent home. To review the SDCOE Decision tree, click 110921_Childcare COVID Decision Tree.
Follow the directions of our Safety Patrol leaders: Concerns, please contact the front office. Refrain from speaking to the patrollers while they are on duty.
Hours: Review the school hours below. The gate by 705 will close at 8:45 a.m. Ensure that your children are on time. Students that are late will need to enter campus via the front office gate. All students that enter after 8:45 a.m. will receive a tardy slip. See the hours below.
FREE Breakfast: 8:15 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. (No student drop-off before 8:15 a.m.)
Campus Arrival: Mustang Families, please help us stay safe by ensuring the following:
–> Refrain from turning left on MacKenzie Creek and Rocking Horse. The no-left turn is a city of Chula Vista traffic sign. Families that enter on MacKenzie creek when the gate is closed and drive against traffic are causing a safety hazard for children and families. We ask that families follow the safety guidelines.
–> Exit out of one lane on MacKenzie Creek. Yelling at arguing with other Mustang families is not the Mustang way. Please have patience and flexibility. Safety Patrol will be coming very soon.
–> Park in visitor parking only.
— > Blocking cars while waiting is not safe. Please park in the surrounding community.
ELAC Representative: We are looking for families to help support our ELAC. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Alma Zamani at Alma.Zamani@cvesd.org. We need our Mustang families to join us to support our students.
Has your child earned an award or achievement in the community? We want to know. Please let us know if your child has earned an award or achievement in the community. We love to celebrate our Mustangs in front of the whole community. Our Mustangs need to know that we are excited and support their community achievements. For example, Marshall Mustang earned first place in the Eastlake swim match on September 6, 2021. Please call the front office and leave the information with Liz or Christine. Dr. Loyce will highlight the Mustang student at the morning Rally.
Campus Safety: Students cannot arrive on campus before 8:15 a.m. unless they are in the YMCA program. Students must be picked up daily by their parent or guardian Students who remain after school must be signed in at an assigned approved program, D.A.S.H. or the YMCA Child Care. TMES does not provide after-school supervision for students who are waiting for parents or siblings. Students are not allowed to remain after school and play on the playground or campus unsupervised.
Bus Loop Safety: The bus loop is only for school busses only. We have families driving in the bus loop during the day and looking into the playground, blocking busses, or dropping students off in the loop. We want to make sure everyone is safe. When individuals drive their vehicles in the bus look and look at staff and students, this action is causing concern to our students and staff as they are worried people are unsafe. Any questions or concerns regarding recess, please contact the classroom teacher. Questions, please contact the office.
Arrival and Departure Reminders:
- For children who line up on the blacktop, parents enter/exit through the blacktop gate. Please exit as soon as morning announcements are finished or by 8:50 a.m. Do not escort your child to class because we lock gates at 8:45 when school starts.
- The gate by the front office is open from 8:15-8:45 a.m. This gate is intended for late student arrivals starting at 8:45 so parents must exit out of the blacktop gate to avoid the crowding at this gate. Students arriving after 8:45 need to come into the office to get a late slip and will be let onto campus through the locked gate by someone in the office. Parents will be allowed to enter campus with their students.
- For children who arrive at Zone 1 (TK, Kinder, SDC students) please remember to pick up from this gate. Parents will be asked to remain outside of the gate after your student is picked up until 3:15 when all the gates will be opened. Do not come onto campus and wait for student dismissal.
- Remember, no dogs are allowed on campus at any time.
Together we can have a smooth transition to the beginning and end of the school day for all students! Thank you.
Amazon Smile: Did you know that there is an easy way to donate to our school? We encourage all families to donate while they shop on Amazon. To learn more about Amazon Smile, click here. Select Thurgood Marshall PTC.
Attendance: All parents are expected to contact the office on the day of the child’s absence at: (619) 656-6252 ext. 550110, 24 hours a day, or email: Christine.Garcia@cvesd.org
