Greetings Thurgood Marshall Elementary School (TMES) Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. It is going to be a great year!

Within this e-mail, you will find specific information as it relates directly to your child to begin the school year. The first day of school is Monday, August 31, 2020.

Your Child’s Name:

Student ID:

Grade:

Child’s Teacher:

Please anticipate e-mail communication from the teacher of record above with an initial TMES welcome with class-specific information, before the start of school, August 31, 2020.

Student placements and teacher assignments are tentative until such time that we see students virtually during the first weeks of school. Historically, new arrivals and or departures occur which may require some change in-class assignments to accommodate class size limitations. If your child is directly impacted, a notification will take place from the front office. As a staff, we make every effort to keep the whole child in mind as we considered class placements to establish well-balanced classes and to provide a positive educational experience for all students to thrive.

From CVESD

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Although county public health officials announced that San Diego schools can reopen for in-person instruction starting on September 1, the Chula Vista Elementary School District will remain in a distance learning model until local data supports a phased reopening.

Chula Vista still has higher rates of infection in certain zip codes than much of the county. The safety of both students and staff is our highest priority. We have every desire to welcome back students to school in person. At this moment, that is not an option given our local data.

California’s governor has made COVID-19 testing and tracing a key component to school reopening plans. The California Department of Public Health recommends that surveillance testing of school staff for COVID-19 be implemented once schools are reopened to at least some in-person instruction. Examples of recommended frequency include testing all staff over two months – where 25% of staff are tested every two weeks, or 50% every month – to rotate testing of all staff over time.

Our District is working with the County Office of Education, health officials and other testing sites to put in place a strategy to provide testing for our school employees. This is one of 14 elements that need to be addressed in a safe reopening of schools. We are continuing our work on that track while also preparing for distance learning when our school year starts on August 31. Even when the District is able to offer in-person instruction, parents who desire for their student(s) to remain on distance learning will continue to have that option.

To learn more about the new school year, we invite you to join us on Thursday, August 27 from 6-7 p.m. for our District Opening Welcome Night! This virtual event helps kick off the new school year online and should also provide answers and context to the questions you may have.

The Welcome Night will occur as a Microsoft “Teams Live” event and parents/guardians will be able to submit questions in real time. Thank you so much for trusting our District to provide the very best education and elementary school experience for your child and family.
